“Falling Gracefully”
By: Ungenita Katrina Prevost
I am such a failure!
Not a very nice thing to say but it’s true. I’ve failed. I’ve made mistakes. I’m imperfect. I’ve made a mess. So what?
There are only 2 exits in life and they both involve falling.
I can’t remember where I read to “Fail Forward Fast”, but that term really resonated with me and if I’m going through a difficult time I remind myself that successful people fail more than unsuccessful people.
When I heard the absolute secret of success is to double your failure rate, I wanted to celebrate! Studies have shown that people who try the most also fail the most.
I talk a lot about dealing with the ugly stuff in our lives. It’s not cute when we’re faced with less than stellar setbacks but we must, we must, we must learn to deal with it ALL. That’s when the real beauty will emerge.
You are not perfect so why hold yourself to such an unrealistic standard. It’s okay to make mistakes. Look at obstacles like an adventure because it’s always exciting when you overcome them. In the event you fall learn to fall gracefully & bounce back decisively.
There’s always a lesson in the fall & please don’t allow it to keep you stuck. Look at how you can learn from it. See it as an opportunity to grow.
I’ve taken many falls in my life but it wasn’t until I learned how to fall gracefully that I was able to pick myself up while maintaining dignity and respect. I stopped beating myself up and made a concerted effort to realize each failed attempt is a learning experience and course correcting is a beautiful thing.
If you’re trying to figure out which path to take, where to go and what to do, avoid staying stuck for fear of falling. If you’re at a crossroad or come to a fork in the road it’s not the time to stop. Make decisions quickly. It’s the time to go for what you want. Don’t second guess yourself and if you fall, fall gracefully & bounce back decisively.
If you’re wondering how to bounce back decisively, pretty, pretty, pretty please take the “non-perfection approach”. Accept the fall and immediately take action so you can rebound and position yourself for success.
Are you ready…?
Set…
Go…
5 questions to ask when you fall…
“What can I learn from this experience?”
“What’s the gift in this situation?”
“What’s the next step?”
“How can I make this better next time?”
“How can I grow from this incident?”
Make the decision that you’re not going to let the fall keep you down, take a minute, swallow your pride, and get up. Staying down is not the pretty way out!
