Do you find people twisting your words around? If so I’d like you to ask yourself the question. Am I effectively communicating myself? I can’t tell you how many times people say “I don’t know what that person does”. Then they try to explain. Has that ever happened to you? When it gets back to you. You wonder why they twisted your words around. It wasn’t intentional. Perhaps they just didn’t understand, maybe you didn’t explain it well. Take note, and make it a point to explain yourself better next time.
No one wants to be misunderstood. Sometimes there are situations in life when people don’t understand you and you can’t ask them why and you can’t do anything about it.
When it comes to your business its important people understand what you do. They may not understand why you do what you do but make an honest effort to explain the benefits you offer the best way you can. When words are twisted it doesn’t benefit anyone. Think of it like a disservice. They don’t have the full story & you miss out on an opportunity.
Speak with conviction every time…
I sometimes say to my clients. How can you sell something you’re not sold on yourself? If you’re shy or meek about what you do. People won’t remember you & more importantly they won’t be revved up to sign up for your services, buy your product or give you a referral.
In networking situations have your pitc h down and maintain excitement about what you’re doing. Desperation does not sell (it’s not cute) but excitement does (now that’s pretty too). No matter what stage your business is in, always say something like, “I am so excited I get to do what I love”. “Business is great”! You may not be where you want to be but I’m certain there’s something that’s great about your business today.
Keep your conversation clear, light and express the important points first. It’s the beauty of communication. The more eager and precise you are –it decreases the chances of someone twisting your words around.
Also, when you focus on what you can give it takes off the pressure. You’ll be less nervous and it reduces your chances of twisting your own words around.
There’s no such thing as tongue twisters in business!
