My “Ghetto Fabulous” Approach To Entrepreneurship

Procrastination and perfectionism often go hand in hand.

Do you put things off because they’re never good enough? If you spend all your time trying to make things perfect, it’s no surprise they NEVER get done. It’s said that successful people fail more times than unsuccessful people. Why do I think this is important? You can learn from your mistakes, you can correct your mistakes. When you’re first starting something you have to just get through those awkward stages, and it might seem “Ghetto”, but if you stay the course and work to refine it, correct it & polish it, it can end up being darn “Fabulous”.

Growing up in the gritty Iberville projects in New Orleans gave me the proper credentials to be called “Ghetto Fabulous” but I think it’s time to update the definition of “Ghetto Fabulous”. Frankly, it needs a makeover. “Ghetto Fabulous” is a stereotype of lower income urban America.

To me “Ghetto Fabulous” is someone who strives for excellence rather than perfection. Someone who is willing to take risks and is not afraid of messing up or making mistakes. It’s someone who is definitely not worried about what other people think. You are living your life fully … flaws & all. You see, when you’re “Ghetto Fabulous” you have a vision of where you’d like to be & you don’t allow where you are TODAY to hold you back.
Your time is now to be a little ghetto …

So, what does being ghetto have to do with your business? Well, for starters no matter what’s going on in your business it’s important you do what you can; in the place you are right now and with what you have. If I could have a dollar for every time someone said “I would … if …” I’d already be a Billion Dollar Beauty. I see so many business owners who want everything to be perfect before they push forward. It’s time to get over that. You won’t look perfect and there is no such thing as a perfect business. Even those businesses that you think are. I’m sure if you peeled back the curtain or gained a backstage pass you’d see some things that you might deem “Ghetto”(Not perfect). Does it matter? Absolutely not!

Here’s a great quote if you are suffering from a severe case of procrastination & perfectionism. “Winners take imperfect action while losers are still perfecting the plan.”

I know I can’t be perfect but I can be excellent. Excellence is not the same as perfection. Perfection is not attainable, and chasing it is pointless. However you can be excellent exactly where you are right now. That’s right. You can go the extra mile & strive for excellence now. Essentially you work with what you’ve got & make the most of it until you can do better or it gets better. The more you do, the better you get but if you’re not taking the necessary steps you’re not giving yourself the chance of getting better & being extraordinary. That’s “Ghetto Fabulous”!

Excellence is better than perfection …

Please do me a favor & save the excuses. It doesn’t matter how humble your beginnings are. I grew up in the projects where the average household income was less than $15,000.00. My father told me “start in your own backyard”. To this day I’m not afraid to start & I make sure I finish what I start. Every time I make a mistake something amazing happens. I get better and I’m led to something better. Risk brings rewards. How did my journey lead here? I took risks, I took action & I took the losses that came along with it. If I didn’t I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. Imperfect action is much better than no action at all.

What are you putting off today that’s preventing you from being “Ghetto Fabulous”?
